Do you want to start a heated debate? You don't have to bring up politics, either. Instead, talk about your favorite pizza by region. How intense is this subject? Jon Stewart once devoted a good five minutes to it on "The Daily Show" in a segment that involved a lot of strong language. But there are regions in the country that are convinced that their type is the best.
First, if your inclination is to say, "Pizza is pizza," then you need to close this post. There are definitely different types, and they mostly center around the crust. There's regular crust, then thin crust, and deep-dish. According to Picklemans.com, regular crust is the most popular, with 33% of respondents listing that. Then thin crust comes in at a close second, with 29% of people saying they favor that. Finally, there were 10% who said they like deep-dish.
First, when most people are talking about regular-style and regular-crust pizza, they have New York in mind. Just like bagels, New York lays claim to being the standard-bearer when it comes to this staple food. They like it because they can eat it with one hand by folding it. It makes for a perfect meal for lunch or dinner. Then, as you make your way around the country, you have New England style, which is cooked in a Greek style in a pan; Chicago deep-dish; Detroit style, which bears a rather close resemblance to Sicilian style; and California style, where nearly everything but tomato and cheese is put on the pie.
There are other regional pockets, like New Haven style, and Quad City style, which is another style made popular near Chicago. Truth be told, we could write a book about all the different regions and that's before we've even mentioned toppings!
Basically, you like the type that you like. It's a matter of personal preference, and you have every right to defend it. Just don't let Jon Stewart know we said that. Are you craving some
